Indian Wedding
Pre-Ceremonies
Before the ceremony and the celebration, Indian weddings usually have pre-ceremonies. This can include:
Sangeet: A vibrant and musical celebration where both families come together to sing, dance, and enjoy a feast, marking the beginning of the festivities.
Haldi: A paste of turmeric (haldi) is applied to the bride and groom's bodies, symbolizing purity, prosperity, and protection.
Mehendi: Applying henna to the hands and feet of the bride (and sometimes the groom), with intricate designs that symbolize love, good luck, and prosperity.
Tilak: The formalization of the alliance between the two families with a mark of auspiciousness placed on the foreheads of the bride and groom by elders.
Roka: The formal announcement of the couple's engagement, often involving the exchange of rings and gifts.
Ganesh Puja: A ritual performed to invoke the blessings of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, for a smooth and auspicious wedding
Baraat: The groom's grand procession to the bride's venue, a vibrant celebration of music, dance, and cultural richness
Varmala: The moment when the bride and groom meet before the wedding, and exchange a garland of flowers, symbolic of the acceptance of marriage
Indian Wedding Rituals and Practices
-
BARAAT
During this festive parade, with loud music, the groom dramatically arrives on a white horse (or white Lamborghini in the case of one couple at Hutton Brickyards).
-
KANYA AAGAMAN
The bride's arrival at the venue, where she is welcomed by the groom's family.
-
VOWS UNDER THE MANDAP
Couples get married under a structure made of four posts known as a mandap. The four posts represent four elements: earth, wind, fire, and water.
-
AGNI
The couple walks around a ritual fire. The number of steps varies depending on the culture.

With 100 acres of Hudson Valley riverfront splendor, tens of thousands of square feet in usable event space, and impeccable accommodations, Hutton Brickyards can help you plan multiple, memorable celebrations over many hours or days.
